Prof. Narendra Ahuja, Director, ITRA has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by YORK UNIVERSITY, UK. The University of York confers the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the society. Prof. Ahuja is one of the thirteen eminent recipients of 2018 honorary degrees, which were awarded as part of the University’s summer graduation ceremonies.
Prof. Ahuja is a PhD in Computer Science from University of Maryland, College Park, USA (1979). Prof. Ahuja attained his B.E. in Electronics Engineering (with Honors) from Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (1972) and M.E. in Electrical Communication Engineering (with Distinction) from Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore (1974).
His current research area is extraction and representation of spatial structure in images and video; use of multiple sources and machine learning for scene representation and recognition; computational cameras; and applications of computer vision to challenging societal problems with focus on developing societies. He has supervised thesis research by about 50 PhD students and 80 other research and postdoc students. He is the Founding President of Vision Technology, a computer vision technology company. His algorithms/prototypes have been used in a number of industrial systems including at General Electric, Westinghouse, Lockheed and Honeywell.
